Have you heard of Schengen? Isn’t it some European agreement or other? Something to do with open borders? Yes, that’s right.
But who or what is Schengen? It’s very simple, really: Schengen is a small winegrowing village opposite Perl on the banks of the River Moselle in Luxembourg. And it was there – on the Moselle, on board the Princesse Marie-Astrid – that the Schengen Agreement between Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany and France was signed on 14 June 1985. Passport control at border crossings were abolished.
