Awarded the title of ‘Bicycle Friendly Guesthouse of the Year 2010 in the Saarland’ by the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC)

Cyclists will receive a warm welcome at Hotel Hammes. This special service that we offer cyclists was recognised by the Saarland’s General German Bicycle Club and the Saarland Tourism Board on 27 October 2010.

Award for Hotel Hammes as a bicycle-friendly host in the Saarland in 2010

Bett & Bike (‘Bed & Bike’), the bicycle tourism initiative launched by the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC), has awarded Hotel Hammes in Perl the title of ‘Bicycle Friendly Guesthouse of the Year 2010 in the Saarland’. The family-run three-star hotel is one of over 5,000 accommodation establishments in Germany with the ADFC’s ‘Bett & Bike’ quality seal, which guarantees a special, cyclist-friendly service. The award is supported by the Saarland’s regional General German Bicycle Club and the Saarland Tourism Board.

‘A shandy for a cyclist’ is Vera Hammes’s motto when she welcomes cycling guests to her establishment with a refreshing welcome drink. Guests appreciate this welcoming gesture just as much as the numerous bicycle-friendly services that Hotel Hammes has been synonymous with as a ‘Bett & Bike’ hotel for many years. For example, bicycles are safely stored overnight in the lockable bicycle garage right next to the hotel terrace – and this is one of the most important criteria for awarding the ‘Bett & Bike’ seal.

Bicycle-friendly service also means providing guests with loaner tools so they can make minor repairs, a drying facility for wet clothes and equipment, not to mention tourist information material. ‘Bett & Bike’ establishments undertake to accommodate guests who are just passing through too, even if they’d only like to stay for one night.

All these requirements are met in exemplary fashion at Hotel Hammes. Breakfast, which is such an important meal for cycling tourists, also promises an abundance of healthy food here: Three types of muesli, crispy rolls and farmhouse bread, fresh fruit salad, mixed quark, bananas and apples, and eggs directly from Perl and laid in classic barn-laying conditions are just a few of the appetising highlights served up on the table in the morning.

Hotel Hammes was named ‘Bicycle-Friendly Guesthouse of the 2010 in the Saarland’ primarily because of its resourceful service, which even exceeds the ‘Bett & Bike’ minimum requirements. For example, cycling guests can make the most of the hotel’s very own free shuttle service from Perl train station, since Hotel Hammes is situated on a hill. The treatment with the steam jet cleaner that Ernst Hammes gives to mountain bikes after intense ‘splash tours’ through tough terrain is unconventional too.

‘Hotel Hammes is constantly looking for ways to improve that are in the best interests of cycling tourists. That’s why you’ll find lots of additional services such as luggage transfer, packed lunches and free bike hire for hotel guests,’ commented Nicole Gilla, ‘Bett & Bike’ Product Manager for Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and the Saarland. Vera Hammes’s recipe for success: ‘We wow our guests with a warm welcome. After all, only delighted guests will return and recommend us.’ Her husband, Ernst Hammes, attributes the high quality of service to the motivated team that has worked well together over many years: ‘We all try to always give our guests something special.’ Guests can look forward to fine dining in the elegant restaurant, whose excellent reputation extends far beyond Perl’s borders.

77 accommodation establishments in the Saarland are certified as bicycle-friendly by the General German Bicycle Club at present. ‘Bett & Bike’ accommodation includes more than just hotels; guesthouses, holiday apartments, youth hostels and campsites also make the grade.
